One strategy that clearly does not work as a long term strategy for IBS or SIBO is restriction. Over my almost 8 years in practice, I have only seen individuals continue to regress the more they restrict. My patients who have restricted long term usually develop nutrient deficiencies, worsening dysbiosis, food anxiety and stress that lead to more gut brain axis dysfunction.

Ironically, most of my patients actually start to improve once they fuel their gut brain axis again. While temporary restriction may help reduce symptoms, to make true progress, you need to be nourished. Eating a diverse array of foods helps ensure you are meeting your nutritional needs and that you are encouraging microbial diversity.
